Planning for City Regions: A Mediterranean Perspective

ADELE SATERIANO
JESÚS RODRIGO-COMINO
LUCA SALVATI (EDS.)

Nova Science Publishers 2021

Renewed theoretical frameworks for planning, permanent monitoring and quantitative indicators based on official statistics, geographic information systems and remote sensing allow an inclusive and holistic representation of socioeconomic systems worldwide. By specifically focusing on metropolitan regions, this book offers a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of socioeconomic and territorial processes hampering spatial planning in Southern Europe, offering a theoretical and practical overview of topics and problems of great interest in the urban debate. Cities in the most advanced economies are progressively abandoning spatially additive, radio-centric patterns of urban expansion. The notion of ‘city-regions’ is meaningful for the understanding of contemporary urban agglomerations and modern patterns of urban growth, adopting a specific, ‘Mediterranean’ perspective. Understanding the reasons and causes behind this transition provides for a better comprehension of economic dynamics in Europe. Addressing the role of sustainability and resilience for urban management, this book offers a thorough reflection on how to manage large city-regions and to support the planning practices and governing action of policy makers and stakeholders. Through practical examples and case studies, the book finally proposes new statistics, indicators, and interpretative approaches, stimulating a thorough reflection on interrelation and complexity of local development mechanisms from different disciplinary perspectives.

Earth Surface Responses and Processes

JESÚS RODRIGO COMINO (ED.)
Elsevier 2021

Precipitation: Earth Surface Responses and Processes provides readers with a general and indispensable overview of processing rainfall processes through radar techniques, numerical models, geostatistical tools, photogrammetric methods, plots, indexes of connectivity or rainfall simulations. The handbook follows a clear and consistent format, and is structured as follows: Introduction (State-of-the-Art); Part 1. Rainfall and climate/atmosphere; Part 2. Models and applications; Part 3. Rainfall as a key actor playing the main role affecting different ecosystems. Part 3: Rainfall affecting the earth surface from different scales and landforms; Part 4: Rainfall and stormwater quality management in urban and rural areas.

Precipitation is a key factor needed for understanding landscape evolution and ecosystem services. Knowing the main precipitation composition, mechanisms and processes allows for efficient land management plans and ecosystem restoration activities. However, precipitation shows different responses under specific environments depending on the climate (from the arid to the polar areas), parent material, scale (from the raindrops to catchment scale), intensity, landscape morphologies (soil sealing, rills, gullies or rivers) or human activities (agriculture or urban areas). Precipitation: Earth Surface Responses and Processes bring this information together and provides indispensable material in a holistic manner for students, scientists and lecturers from different environmental disciplines such as climatology, meteorology, geomorphology, hydrology, soil science, geography, engineering, or ecology.
LOS BOSQUES DE LA SERRANÍA DE RONDA
Una perspectiva espacio-temporal

José Gómez Zotano
José Antonio Olmedo Cobo (eds.)

2021

In response to climate change and limited fossil fuels, renewable energy is being heavily promoted throughout Europe. Despite general support for green energy, perceived Iandscape change and loss of Iandscape quality have featured heavily in opposition campaigns.
The COST Action ’Renewable Energy and Landscape Quality' (RELY) systematically investigated the nexus between renewable energy production and Iandscape quality. Its aim was to analyse how Iandscape protection and renewable energy deployment can be reconciled to contribute to the sustainable transformation of energy systems.
This book compiles guidelines for assessing Iandscape suitability for, and vulnerability to, renewable energy projects together with a tool-box for Iandscape-aware public participation in planning. It furthermore elaborates a multilingual glossary of terms related to Iandscape and energy.
Geomatic Approaches for Modeling Land Change Scenarios

Francisco Escobar (Eds.)

2017

Land change models can help scientists and users to understand change processes and design policies to reduce the negative impact of human activities on the earth system at scales ranging from global to local. With the development of increasingly large computing capacities, multiple computer-based models have been created, with the result that the specific domain covered by the umbrella term “modeling” has become rather vague. Even within the context of the spatiotemporal modeling of land use and cover changes (LUCC), the term “modeling” can have many different meanings. There is also an increasing interest in the literature in comparing the different land change models. One of the aims of this book is to contribute to these processes. We focus on geomatic modeling approaches applied in this context to land change, a term that has been used synonymously for a number of years with LUCC and seems to be overtaking it as the generally used term for this phenomenon. The objective of this book is also clear to see from the methods we have chosen and the subjects we address. This book deals first and foremost with spatially explicit data that can be mapped. However, its additional focus on land change and land change scenarios in the wider field of environmental and social dynamics give it a certain consistency with a view to practical applications.

Historical Geographies of Anarchism: Early Critical Geographers and Present-Day Scientific Challenges

2017

In the last few years, anarchism has been rediscovered as a transnational, cosmopolitan and multifaceted movement. Its traditions, often hastily dismissed, are increasingly revealing insights which inspire present-day scholarship in geography. This book provides a historical geography of anarchism, analysing the places and spatiality of historical anarchist movements, key thinkers, and the present scientific challenges of the geographical anarchist traditions.

This volume offers rich and detailed insights into the lesser-known worlds of anarchist geographies with contributions from international leading experts. It also explores the historical geographies of anarchism by examining their expressions in a series of distinct geographical contexts and their development over time. Contributions examine the changes that the anarchist movement(s) sought to bring out in their space and time, and the way this spirit continues to animate the anarchist geographies of our own, perhaps often in unpredictable ways. There is also an examination of contemporary expressions of anarchist geographical thought in the fields of social movements, environmental struggles, post-statist geographies, indigenous thinking and situated cosmopolitanisms.

This is valuable reading for students and researchers interested in historical geography, political geography, social movements and anarchism.
